Breast Cancer Awarenesss Month

Catherine is a local dancer and a breast cancer survivor. I recently worked with a documentary filmmaker Brynmore Williams to help document her story. Five years ago Catherine was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy on her left breast as part of her treatment. Through a process of healing Catherine has had her chest tattooed with henna ink and begun to dance on occasion without her shirt. This has been a healing process from her and one of inspiration for many others. The video with a more in depth look at her story will be available soon.

North American Sea Glass Festival

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the North American Sea Glass Festival for the New York Times. Although I have spent plenty of time at the ocean and done a minimal amount of sea glass collecting myself, I definitely learned a tremendous amount at the festival. What struck me most was not only the number of collectors and enthusiast but the history that is tied to each piece. Of the many judges and participants, the author Carol Lambert (pen name C.S. Lambert) impressed me the most - she was able to date a piece of Canton china back to 1500 a.c. or earlier and was a wealth of knowledge in identifying the previous lives of multiple other pieces. In addition to learning, it was a ton of fun to see the excitement around the "Shard of the Year" competition., which included a $1,000 prize for the winner.

Number of Families in Shelters Rises a New York Times story

At Crossroads Rhode Island a shelter for homeless families, there are up to 18 families at any given point. I was able to spend the day with one family, the Griffith's with father Nick, mother Lacey, daughter Ava and son Ethan, as they went about their normal routines of daily life. The shelter rules mandated that they be out of the shelter from the times of 9 am to 3 pm so phone calls were made on the side of the street and the family took a trip to Providence Place mall to escape the heat of over 90 degrees. Their perseverance and optimism despite their circumstances was remarkable to me.
